Historic Winn Dixie

This simple commercial building was built as a grocery store in Martinsville in 1954. The building’s main floor is at the street level of Fayette Street, and its basement has a grade entrance on North Moss Street. The basement served as the store’s warehouse and receiving area. The main level’s façade has storefront across most of its width, which is shaded by a cantilevered concrete canopy, with a cultured stone and brick masonry wall; the remainder of the exterior wall has a red brick veneer. The upper level has a 15’ plaster ceiling hung from clear-span steel girders.

The upper level will be converted to two commercial spaces at the front of the building, with 20 loft apartments that take advantage of the existing high ceilings. Windows and skylights will be added to bring daylight into the apartments. The lower level with be adapted to 9 commercial spaces and 5 apartments, all of which will have 12’ ceilings with exposed steel joists. This project is expected to utilize Federal and State Historic Tax Credits.
